From September 20th to 23rd, industry leaders will gather in Berlin to discuss the future of railway technology and public transportation at InnoTrans 2016. The leading international trade fair for transport technology takes place every two years and drew more than 2,700 exhibitors and 134,000 visitors last time it took place in 2014. Companies from 150 countries will showcase their new products this time around – and of course as a leading provider of embedded platforms for the transportation industry, we will be present, and share exciting news as well.

For more than 30 years Kontron has been a trusted innovator for ultra-rugged computing platforms. Currently our standards-based commercial off the shelf (COTS) and custom products are deployed in a broad range of rail, road and shipping applications all around the world. Our open architecture platforms are helping drive the data revolution in the transportation industry, improving safety and efficiency while enhancing the passenger experience. Among the various demo applications, we will be showcasing our newest Internet of Things (IoT) ready devices at our exhibition booth in Hall 2.1, Stand 320. Also highlighted will be our TRACe transportation operational computers. With their full breadth of security, interoperability, reliable connectivity, power efficiency and scalability, they have been designed with the specific requirements of today’s transit agencies in mind.
A New Era of Transportation
Security concerns, currently omnipresent, generate growing demand for video surveillance in transportation applications. CCTV does not only ensure tidiness and safety by serving as a deterrent for vandals and other perpetrators, it indeed makes customers feel more comfortable as demonstrated by this survey by renowned German social research institute FORSA. Storing and analyzing tremendous amounts of video data however does pose an enormous challenge for rail operators. Especially when it comes to real-time analysis of video feeds – powerful, secure and highly integrated yet very robust systems are critical.
One of the most exciting visions for the future of mobility is autonomous driving – both on road and rail. Technology to make this vision a reality already exists, and is widely used in IoT applications around the world. Autonomous trains, like their counterparts on the streets and industrial robots toiling at assembly lines all over the globe, rely on countless sensors which constantly gather key data about route conditions, vehicle status and environmental surroundings. This information needs to be processed within fractions of a second, automatically monitored and meticulously analyzed in order to allow for rapid adjustments in case of an emergency. This is exactly what our TRACe range of high performance transportation computers have been designed for. We are thrilled to be at the forefront of this revolutionary new era of transportation and will continue to innovate along these lines.
