We Certify – SYSGO and Kontron at InnoTrans 2016

Hi Railway Community,

This is my last day at the Kontron booth at InnoTrans 2016 in Berlin. I wanted to share with you the number one topic, which we have discussed with InnoTrans visitors: It is about how to certify such a complex hardware to SIL 4!

As you remember SYSGO and Kontron combined forces to certify a PikeOS and Kontron VX3035 3U VPX board based system in the context of a computer based interlocking project to SIL 4. SIL 4 for such a complex hardware is impossible, but if you put PikeOS together with the right level of Build In Test and an appropriate redundancy architecture on the VX3035, SIL 4 can be achieved. This safety concept allows the customer to easily move to a newer version of the Kontron hardware if the current version gets End Of Life. Yes of course, you need to go through a partial recertification, but since the CPU architecture (in this case the next generation of Intel i7) stays the same, the re-certification effort is manageable, both at hardware and OS levels.

As this topic is more complex then this brief description, Robert Negre (Head of Transportation Business Line at Kontron) and I decided to shed some light on this in a white paper.Stay tuned and follow the Kontron and SYSGO blog to read more on this in the near future…

Cheers – Mehmet
