The International Union of Railways is a key rail industry body with more than 200 members from 100 countries worldwide.
It promotes rail transport at world level and meets the challenges of mobility and sustainable development. Founded in 1922 with the aim to standardize rail industry practices it was the lead contributor in 1990 to define the GSM-R radio telecommunication system for railways to achieve international interoperability for voice and signaling applications. Since 2012 the UIC is working on the successor for GSM-R called FRMCS to evolve the communication system in the rail system to meet new needs in terms of capacity, throughput, flexibility, reliability and security.
Kontron Transportation is closely working with the UIC since the definition and implementation of GSM-R and is currently frequently interacting with the FRMCS working groups to drive the FRMCS specification process forward.
